Later in the day in Hope

I'm glad I did take off today. I didn't feel great when I woke up and was concerned that I might be coming down with something. Anyways, it gave me a chance to take a nap and to visit the town. The town itself is nothing too special, but the surroundings are gorgeous as it is surrounded by mountains. As you no doubt all know, hope is the "Chainsaw Carving Capital of Canada" (I'm not making this up) and these carvings dot the whole of downtown. I took a picture of the nicest one I saw.

The people are really nice here as well. I stopped in at the health food store to get some vitamines (I wasn't feeling well) and the lady was super friendly. I told her about my trip and she gave me a bunch of free samples even though I likely will never be her customer again. Also, I was sure that the waitress at the restaurant where I ate this morning's breakfast came straight out of a Hollywood script. She had a one-liner for anything that anyone said and she called everyone "darling" or "junior". I think I was baptized "honey" by her. The restaurant was mediocre, but she made it entertaining:)

Here are some pictures of Hope.

They're calling for nice weather tomorrow. So I should be off. I'll hopefully post again in a few days. I'm off now to a restaurant called Rolly's (I had to go eat there:) and then it is off to see Inidiana Jones!

Hi there, wherever you are!

Sorry I haven't posted since last week. Things got busy at work. You remember work, don't you? The grind. Bet you miss it.

Glad to hear that all is going well, albeit that rain storm didn't sound like much fun. It looks beautiful out there, but I wouldn't expect anything less of B.C. Hope to see it for myself some day.

Not a bad hair cut... not bad at all. It looks highly practical, which Dad will totally respect. But I don't think Mame will like it much. As soon as they figure out how to post comments, I expect that they will render judgement for themselves :) (Hi Mame & Dad!).

It's beautiful and sunny here in the North 'burbs of Chicago... intermittent clouds, warm and a little windy. Talked to Mame earlier, and she said it was cold and raining in Moncton.

Would you like more family news? About your nieces... this was a special Saturday. We held Lorna's birthday party with her school/neighborhood friends. We had a traditional party at the local Parks & Recreation Center. You know... pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs, hot potato, etc. It was fabulous, because the Parks & Rec folks did all the entertaining. We just had to bring the greasy cheese pizza, the sugar-blast pink lemonade, and the super-sugar-blast cake. And speaking of blast, that's just what the kids had. Maybe it was all the sucrose, but watching a couple of the boys made me quite happy that I have daughters (although one of them was an amazing dancer... imagine that at 7 years old... his body did not stop moving until we put food in front of him... man!).

Erika was there too, of course. Although she seemed to think the games we're too young for her. After all, she has reached the dignified age of 10! :) Guess what we're reading together right now... Anne of Green Gables! Did I already tell you that? I know I told you about finishing up the Harry Potter series. Anyway, really enjoying re-visiting the beloved books of childhood.

Well, some of the girls followed us home from the party, and they're playing with Lorna's birthday presents in the living room. Bill's in the family room, watching the news coverage of the Democrats deciding whether or not to count the delegates in Florida and Michigan (you're probably not following American politics to closely from your bike seat - it was sort of a big week, with Bush's former press secretary publishing an embarrassing tell all book!).

Anyway, the girls just walked in. They want me to go outside with them to see our neighbor cut up a tree that was blown over in a big wind storm yesterday. It was a big tree, too... taller than their two-story house. Would have been dramatic and sorta sad to see it come down. Anyway, I better go and see the dramatic doings at Canterbury Estates (that's the pretentious name of our subdivision - much posher than we deserve!).

Happy pedalling!

Hey Monique,

Good to hear from you. It's funny, we communicate more when I'm in the middle of nowhere than ever:)

Sorry, I missed Lorna's birthday. I can always remember Erika's (Dec 29) I guess because it is so close to Christmas, but I can never remember Lorna's. For what it's worth, happy belated birthday Lorna.

You had told me that you were reading the Anne books again when you called the week before last. I was thinking about that conversation when I was riding the other day (it's crazy what you think about when your on a bike for 6 or 8 hours) and I forgot to recommend the Golden Compass books. The first 2 are really good (better than the movie), but the last one is complete garbage - and apparently it won a number of prizes. The books are fairly complex, but Erika's smarter than me. So I'm sure she could figure them out.

Anyways, I won't recount what's happening to me as I will be post that info in a little bit. Thanks for keeping in touch with me and talk to you later.

hey Roland,

Found your blog!! Wasn't hard, gotta like Google.

Anyway... HOLLY SHIT!!! Sorry, I hope that falls under that PG 13 rating you're aiming for (yes I read all the posts an comments). You're biking across Canada!!! This is pretty darn crazy (not to say a lot of work).

It's funny though, when you talked about this trip. My mind refused to take you literally. Unconsciously, I considered this trip more of on theoretical basis.

Anyway, happy to see that it is in-fact real. Keep us informed, I'll subscribe to you're RSS feed (if there is one).

PS: I like the name of URL (that's the rovingrolly.blogspot

Hey Terry,

I emailed you the blog address when I sent it out, but I received a non-deliverable notice from your address. I figured you were screening your emails and I was on the blacklist.

Anyways, thanks for checking me out. No problem with the wording used in your post as I think Julien and Dominique may be the only under aged people reading this and I'm guessing they've heard a lot worst from Renee.

Yes, I can fully attest that this trip is real and that my legs are feeling it:)

Talk to you later,

Roland
